Excellent point! Yes, there are a lot of opportunities available to help get these types of walkways, pathways created. It is my hope that the new Finance Officer's expertise with grants is the beginning place for the town to begin pursuing such options.

I recently read that Blacksburg got a Federal Safe Routes to School grant to help the town create ways for more children to walk and bike to school with increasing safety. I remember a few months ago, Christiansburg looked into putting in a sidewalk on Cambria, and they said it would cost somewhere around $93,000, which was too much, and the subject was dropped. What's wrong with applying for a federal grant? I think the Safe Route to School program lets you apply for up to $500,000. Then Christiansburg children could get a little more exercise and the routes could encourage everyone to walk/bike more often. This especially is a good idea now that there will be something resembling public transit in the next month or so. People could get in the habit of walking, which they'll need to do in order to get to the bus stops to take them to the commercial district of choice.
