From 2001 Town Council Minutes:
- July 17, 2001: Town Council: “TOWN MANAGER TERPENNY reported that the Town received a letter from the Kiwanis Club requesting they be reimbursed $1,410 by the Town to offset the permit costs for their annual fair. In previous years the Town has reimbursed the costs as a contribution, and Manager Terpenny asked Council to consider making the reimbursement again this year, pointing out that much of the money comes back to the Town in recreation programs. On motion by Councilman Weaver, seconded by Councilman Ashworth, Council voted to reimburse the Kiwanis Club permit fees in the amount of $1,410.00. Council’s vote is as follows: AYES: Ashworth, Ballengee, Barber, Carter, Lester, and Weaver. NAYS: None.
- October 2, 2001: Town Council: “Mr. David Shanks, Director of the New River Valley Small Business Bureau, gave Council a handout showing the revenue and tax projections for the proposed business. He explained that not only will this recreational business bring revenue to the Town, but most businesses in the immediate area will also benefit, due to increased patronage. He stated that the taxes the business will pay are only one of the benefits to Christiansburg. Mr. Shanks said that another factor in choosing this location is that the topography of the property, while not suitable for most businesses, is ideal for a miniature golf course due to the steep slope of the land.”
- November 20, 2001: Town Council: “REPRESENTATIVF FFOM IHOP REGARDING MEALS TAX Stephanie Bennett. representing the owner of the Christiansburg IHOP, explained that IHOP had been penalized by the Town for a late payment of their meals tax. She said she believes the payment was timely mailed and asked Council to consider waiving the penalty fees. Mayor Linkous said that the envelope was postmarked by the post office after the meals tax due date. Town Attorney McGhee said that Council has no authority to revoke fees. The penalty fees are mandatory per Town Code. Attorney McGhee stated that Council has “no leeway at all”, that nothing can be done. Councilman Barber said he was sypathetic to the problem, but was powerless to resolve. Manager Terpenny said that he would provide her with a copy of the envelope and she could take the matter up with the post office where the payment was mailed.” … “MR. BALLENGEE AND MR. BARBER – Water, Sewer & Solid waste Committee Recommendation: 1. Low water pressure in neighborhood along Peppers Ferry Road/Rt. 114. This matter was brought before Council at the time of the water rate increase this year. The committee has reviewed the problem and has tried to come up with the best possible solution. The Water, Sewer & Solid Waste Committee is recommending that the Town offer a suitable pump to residents, with the homeowners responsible for installation fees. There are approximately twelve
homes that will benefit from the pumps. Councilman Ballengee said that Ferguson Enterprise offers a suitable pump for approximately two hundred seventy-five dollars. Labor costs will range from one hundred to three hundred dollars depending on each installation. Manager Terpenny stated that pressure may still fall below normal due to the varying level of water in the water tank. On motion by Councilman Ballengee, seconded by Councilman Ashworth, Council voted to approve the recommendation as follows: AYES: Ashworth, Ballengee, Barber, and Weaver. NAYS: None.
